Increase 7 Percent Over 2009
Bolstered by support from its core brands, Chrysler Group bucked the trend of its American counterparts and delivered a sales increase of 7 percent, year-over-year. The gains were delivered by strong sales of most Jeep vehicles, as well as increases across Dodge, Chrysler, and Ram.
The Dodge/Jeep slate of crossover SUVs was the strongest seller in August. The Dodge Nitro and its Jeep siblings, the Compass, Patriot, and Liberty, were all up year over year by more than 30 percent. Sales of the Dodge Challenger coupe ballooned by 190 percent over last August. The only vehicle in the fleet of Ram trucks to post a gain was the Ram pickup itself, which delivered an 8 percent increase.
The Chrysler brand itself was down 4 percent from last August, due in part to discontinued model lines. The loss of the Aspen, Pacifica, and Crossfire was nearly balanced by increased Sebring and Town and Country sales, though it's believed that many sales went to fleets. The aging PT Cruiser hatchback and 300 sedan were typically lackluster.
During the Cash for Clunkers program of 2009, which boosted the sales of Ford and General Motors, Chrysler saw a negative result: a decline of 15 percent, making the month's sales gain a little less surprising.
