lb-ft Of Torque, 37,100-lbs Towing Capacity
The new 2021 Ram Heavy Duty is now offering the highest torque rating for a diesel truck and a segment-leading gooseneck towing capacity, thanks to the updated Cummins diesel engine under the bonnet.
For 2021, the high-output Cummins 6.7-liter inline-six diesel features higher boost pressure from the variable geometry turbocharger and a flow rate increase in the fuel delivery system to produce an additional 75 lb-ft of torque for a total of 1,075 lb-ft. Ram didn’t disclose any horsepower figures but last year’s model offered 400 HP.
The 2021 updates also include an upgrade to the rear portion of the Ram Heavy Duty’s frame, which is made out of fully boxed rails and the rear-axle cross member and can feature a fifth wheel and a gooseneck hitch, to accommodate for the increased towing capacity.
The 2021 RAM Heavy Duty features a best-in-class 37,100 lbs fifth-wheel towing capacity, which was also made possible by a new in-house hitch design, beating the Ford F-Series Super Duty and its measly 37,000 lbs. This allows the Ram 3500 to haul the heaviest travel trailers according to the company. The tow rating for a conventional hitch is 23,000 lbs.
The optional hardware for the fifth-wheel and gooseneck is fully integrated into the production box floor, and include fifth-wheel pucks, gooseneck bolt plates, and gooseneck center castings, as well as a 7-pin connector and a 4/7-pin trailer connector.
Ram has also added a new digital rearview mirror that shows video in real-time from its rear-facing camera and can be switched to a classic reflective mirror when turned off. Customers can also opt for an external power source, which is located at the left rear corner of the bed and features a 400W inverter and a water-resistant lid for the plug.
The 2021 Ram Heavy Duty pickup trucks will arrive at dealerships across the US this month.
