Can’t Stop Whining About It
One does not need to be a millionaire anymore to enjoy whopping amounts of oomph from a daily driver, as modern muscle cars have become more powerful than the true blue-blooded machines.
Dodge’s latest proposal in the segment is the Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye, a big, heavy, powerful and stupidly fast coupe that can run the quarter mile in 10.8 seconds at 131 mph (211 km/h) without any outside intervention.
Equipped with the 6.2-liter engine from the retired Demon featuring a 2.7-liter supercharger, high-speed valve train, strengthened connecting rods and pistons and a few other different oily bits, it’s an absolute blast in a straight line. Nought to 60 mph (0-96 km/h) takes 3.4 seconds and top speed is 203 mph (327 km/h).
The engine is matched to an eight-speed automatic transmission that channels the 797 horsepower and 707 pound-feet (957 Nm) of torque to the rear wheels. Make no mistake, the Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye is a very big boy weighing in at over 4,500 pounds (2,050 kg), although it does not try to pass as something else.
Push the throttle down on a twisty road and you will become aware of its large footprint and mass. The adjustable suspension does a good job at absorbing most bumps in the road and makes the car feel very restrained, so it’s quite comfortable for a beast with nearly 800 HP available on tap.
Can you live with it on a daily basis and scrap the black key that limits the output to only 500 HP, carrying the red key in your pocket? If you have $71,945 to spare, which is the official MSRP, you may want to scroll down and find out for yourselves in the video review from Henry Catchpole, though we encourage you to do the same if you don’t. After all, who doesn’t like a very powerful car with a sweet whining sound?
