Long-Term Test
The Dodge Challenger SRT Demon has crafted itself a special place in automotive history books. Created to be the fastest stock drag car out there without costing a small fortune, and still be a car you could drive every day, it’s unlike anything we’ve ever seen.
With everything set up for drag use and 100+ unleaded high-octane fuel in the tank, it can run the quarter mile in 9.65 seconds at 140 mph (225 km/h), at least according to Dodge. The official 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) sprint takes a whopping 2.3 seconds which means that it can smoke pretty much any car out there, regardless of price or maker.
Now, putting down 840 hp, which is what the 6.2-liter supercharged V8 churns out in optimal spec, proved to be very tricky. Thus, it was often beaten at the drag strip by less powerful vehicles, as it spun its rear wheels, losing precious time in the process. Mastering the launch takes a lot of time and practice, and even after one year, KelleyBlueBook couldn’t run the quarter-mile in under 10 seconds. The best they achieved was 10.23, at 135 mph (217 km/h). Still impressive, but not what Dodge promised.
The numbers were revealed as they concluded their long-term test, during which, besides a couple of service runs for oil changes, one every six months, that totaled $240, it was all gas and fun. The best recorded fuel consumption was 15.29 mpg (15.4 l/100 km / 18.4 mpg UK) and the worst was 8.88 mpg (26.5 l/100 km / 10.7 mpg UK). But you don’t expect a 840 hp beast to sip fuel like a Prius, do you?
During the time spent in their garage, the Demon was recalled twice. You can find out how that went, if there’s anything major to complain about after putting nearly 4,000 miles (6,437 km) on the odo and how the Demon coped as a daily driver for 12 months by hitting the play button below.
