China’s Jeep Grand Commander Might Come To U.S. As
A… Chrysler?
The United States will reportedly get its own version of the Jeep Grand Commander in the form of a new Chrysler.
According to Allpar, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is looking to restore life in the Chrysler brand by basing a new model on the Grand Commander and building it in the U.S, most likely in Illinois.
It remains to be seen how deep the brand’s engineers are in the development of the three-row Chrysler SUV, but a number of prototypes have been testing throughout the U.S. in recent months disguised as Jeep Cherokees. A significant portion of the vehicle’s development is said to have been already completed in China.
Given the love of large SUVs in the United States, it’s not surprising that FCA would consider using the Grand Commander as the base for a new SUV. However, it would be surprising to see such a vehicle sold by the Chrysler brand and not that of Jeep, which makes much more sense.
In China, the Grand Commander has been designed to comfortably seat seven passengers in its three rows and comes outfitted with a fresh and modern-looking interior that includes a large touchscreen infotainment system.
Visually, the Grand Commander looks like a typical Jeep and if it is to be sold as a Chrysler in the U.S., will inevitably undergo a serious makeover.
If a seven-seat Chrysler SUV comes to fruition, U.S. customers will no longer have to wait for the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer for a full-size SUV. |
