Off Down Under
The Jeep Wrangler is about as American as vehicles get. But it’s a big seller in markets around the world. Like Australia, where Jeep has launched this pair of special editions.
Called the Golden Eagle and Freedom editions, they’re both based on the JK-generation Wrangler. (Specifically the Wrangler Sport.) We’re not sure exactly how that works, considering that FCA has stopped making the JK model at the Toledo plant. But wherever they’re arriving from, they strike us as a fitting send-off for a long-serving off-roader.
The Jeep Wrangler Golden Eagle (pictured in black) recalls a past model. But with the big bird decal on the hood, it calls to mind (our minds at least) another American classic. It also features a body-colored three-piece hardtop and fenders, bronze badges and 18-inch alloys, tinted rear windows, and rock rails. The interior is done up in black with bronze stitching, more golden-eagle logos, and Moroccan Sun trim.
The Freedom edition (pictured in red) takes a more militaristic approach with star decals and Oscar Mike insignia – military shorthand for “On the Move.” It’s further distinguished by a Granite Crystal-finished grille and 18-inch wheels, as well as body-colored fenders, rock rails, and a multi-material black interior with Iron Grey accents.
“Since its inception the Wrangler has served as the ultimate Jeep icon as well as the world’s most capable off-road SUV,” said Jeep Australia director Guillaume Drelon. “With lineage that can be traced back to the legendary Willys Jeep – which were once produced here in Australia – these Wrangler heritage editions tie back to Jeep’s military origins with the ‘Freedom Edition” and to one of the most popular special editions back in the 80s with the ‘Golden Eagle’.”
Jeep will only offer 120 examples of the Golden Eagle and 150 of the Freedom edition in Australia. Local pricing ranges from $42,990 to $49,490. Those figures are in Australian dollars, and work out to about $32-37k in equivalent American greenbacks.
